The Dilemma Experiment: Building a Simulation of Cooperation

The Dilemma Experiment is an open-source project exploring how cooperation emerges, survives, and collapses among self-interested agents.

This series documents the project from the ground up—from game-theoretic foundations and domain architecture to multi-agent populations, tournaments, evolutionary dynamics, reputation systems, experiment metrics, visualization, and eventually LLM-driven agents.

Each episode captures a stage of the journey: the problem being explored, the architectural decisions behind the implementation, the experiments we run, and what we learn along the way.

The project is being built incrementally and transparently, with documented Architecture Decision Records, behavioral tests, and reproducible experiments.

The question at the center of the series is simple:

How can cooperation emerge among agents whose immediate incentives encourage defection?
